MOTEC FEBRUARY TEAM RETURNS HOME

The Motec team of four have returned to the UK following a ten day working visit. The team of Mr Ofori-Atta (Orthopaedic Surgeon), Dr Christine Amakye (Anaesthetist), Ms Rosemary Doogan (Theatre Scrub sister) and Mrs Patti Edwards (senior Reporting Radiographer) worked and lectured at some of Motec’s target hospitals including Lister in Accra, AkosomboVRA Hospital, Koforidua St Joseph’s and Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospitals. The team delivered lectures on safe radiology, pre-operative assessment, infection control, fracture management, treatment of osteoarthritis, total knee arthroplasty, and many more topics. A lot of education and exchange of ideas did happen on the job with local staff.

The team worked at Akosombo with the Resident General Surgeon Dr Nkrumah Mills (FRCS), Resident Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Emmanuel Agbemey, and Surgical Registrar in rotation from KOMFO Anokye Teaching Hospital- Dr Otu Boateng, the entire theatre and ward nursing staff. Mrs Patti Edwards worked with her counterpart radiographer at Akosombo. A ward was allocated to patients receiving treatment from the combined team. A number of complex and basic operations were performed including hip fracture fixation by hemi arthroplasty, dynamic hip screws, knee arthroscopies, total knee replacement, Clinic work at Akosombo was assisted by a dedicated team of Nursing staff. More than 30 cases referred from south of Ghana were seen in the clinics. Motec is participating in a project to develop a pre-operative assessment protocol, the training of staff at Akosombo to run pre-op assessment clinic, make safer anaesthetic care and hoping to assist in the training of a physiotherapist.

The Director- Brother Johannes Torwoe leading a group of the religious and the Medical Superintendant Dr Akrofi Mante welcomed the team at Koforidua. A series of lectures were given. This was followed by a series of meetings with the Director to review the direction of support from Motec and local demand by resident orthopaedic surgeon for modification of web site tribute made to the Late Dr. Mensah. The statement in the article (see web site under documents -2006) ‘Long Distance Orthopaedic Trauma Relief’ states: ‘For instance, there were only two orthopaedic surgeons at Koforidua St Joseph’s Orthopaedic Hospital, both nearing their retirement (Dr Cassals, Spanish and Dr Oware Mensah, the Ghanaian) who were working their hearts out, and even by the time I finished scripting my story, the information came through that the Ghanaian surgeon had quietly died in the early hours of 11th November 2006.’ It will be clear in simple English who is dead in this script and the unfounded interpretation should be laid to rest and our prayers should remain with the late Dr Oware Mensah, his family and all those dedicated to his vision. This subject will not be visited again as Motec moves on. Other issues including cleaner and dedicated ward for orthopaedic work, and after care of patients were discussed. It was clear that a little more effort is needed to be in place to get Motec clinical teams working at Koforidua. Educational programmes seemed useful with handouts of lectures requested by local staff. From then on, the team paid a courtesy call on Daasebere Oti Boateng at his residence and the Palace at Koforidua. Dasebere gave audience to the Motec team and exchanged useful information. Motec expressed her gratitude to Daasebere for agreeing to be a key patron in Ghana.

The visit to Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital was brief but very useful. The team delivered a series of lectures at the Nurses Training College. Discussions were held with the Medical Director Dr S.K. Amuzu and Rev Sr. Agathina, Sr. Superior about the freight of medical supplies from Motec that had arrived in Ghana. Full details of report will be posted on web site in due course.
